Quick Start is a small group leadership course that introduces new JROTC members to basic JROTC skills and integrated activities. It is essentially a "Head Start" camp for JROTC. Quick Start allows new members to meet the 7 milestones contained in the Yellow Jacket Mile. Instruction is presented in drill & ceremonies, uniform wear, general subjects, and integrated activities.
Returning JROTC members will be present to assist in instruction and to qualify themselves for leadership positions to be assigned once school starts. The senior Command & Staff members will be present to familiarize themselves with their new duties, meet the new JROTC members, and to assist in instruction. Activity camps are held in the afternoon from 1 to 3 for the Armed Drill team, Academic team, Color Guard, Unarmed Drill team, Marksmanship Team, and Physical Fitness team.
Both new and old students who attend Quick Start get a big head start on Yellow Jacket Mile requirements and leadership qualification. They will begin school much more prepared than their peers. They quickly become "go to" members of our organization. Promotions and awards are given during the graduation ceremony. All parents are invited to attend any and all portions of Quick Start, but in particular graduation. Information will be presented to the parents by 1SG Thompson and the Booster Club members after graduation.
Quick Start is held each summer during the last two weeks of July. All are welcome. You can register for Quick Start by either filling out and submitting the form below, by regular e-mail, by phone (868-0369, 742-3634), by fax (869-2253), or by mailing the registration form in. If you are unable to do any of these just come as you are. Quick Start begins each day at 8am in room B1 and concludes at 3pm.

JCLC
Junior Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) is presented each summer at locations across the United States. JCLC is designed as a leadership development course for JROTC cadets who have completed at least one year of JROTC. In Louisiana our camp is either at Camp Beauregard near Pineville or at lake Bistineau State Park near Doyline.
Activities at the camp include a leader reaction course (LRC), athletics, various competitions, drill & ceremonies, rappelling, and many other opportunities to exercise leadership. Many JROTC units across the country make the camp a requirement for holding a leadership position in JROTC.

MILITARY BALL
The Military Ball is an annual event that combines military style ceremony and formality with a traditional high school dance. The Military Ball features a court composed of male and female JROTC members elected by their peers.
The evening begins with a formal receiving line, then continues with opening ceremonial procedures and dinner. After dinner the Military Ball Court is announced and honored. Immediately thereafter the seniors are honored by being passed through the Arc of Steel which signifies the completion of their JROTC journey.
The final event of the evening is a dance, complete with DJ, with music selected by the cadets themselves. This is the part of the evening when everyone thoroughly enjoys themselves. The event is held annually at the Officer or NCO club at Barksdale AFB in a safe, secure, and controlled environment.
Male members of Byrd's JROTC wear their uniform to the Ball, while the girls wear evening attire. Students who are not in JROTC may attend as a guest of a Byrd JROTC member. Male guests wear a coat and tie while girls wear evening dresses. The tickets this year were $20.00. Opportunities are provided throughout the year to win free tickets to the Military Ball.
